Bottle front

Part of the Geile Weine 2023 Advent Calendar. In this case, it was the standard calendar, and 2022 was the "Premium". The prices did not seem particularly far apart, so the most-obvious difference is the box the wines came in. There was some overlap on wines from 2022 to 2023, but not as many as would have been nice for direct comparisons. For the order of the wines, days are the days as the wines came out of the box, though at least day 5 and 24 got swapped, when looking at the information sheet. April started drinking these on the 3rd, as she bought the calendar once Geile Weine offered a last-chance coupon. So Day 2 was the last wine tried, on December 26th.

As a general review for the calendar, the whites again seemed to be solid, there were only two Rosés, one was good, one not so much, and then the Reds were mostly just red table wines. Some were unpleasant, but mostly just "meh" at best.

At least that was April's view. This year, Jeanette, Megan, Barb, and Gavin also joined in tasting, with Jeanette trying all the days, though oftentimes a few days removed from when the bottle was first opened, and the others joining for 17 through 23, because of what became a tasting party in Berlin.

For this particular wine:

Tasting notes:

April - Astringent into wine shivers. It did smell like a red wine, but this wasn't a favorite. I guess I didn't go, "eww, disgusting", as I have with some of the previous wines, and the lingering aftertaste isn't _super_ bitter (but neither is it pleasant), so maybe it's not that bad, but it's certainly not easy drinking or something that I like.

I think I'll slot it between days 8 and 7. So toward the bottom, but not in the awful section. 17,9,15,4,16,18,12,11,3,8,19,7,5,10,6,14,13

Jeanette - Not so bad. It is kind of sour, but also tastes of red grapes and barrel. Classical red wine taste. And then pilzig, maybe astringent, and long-lasting bitterness in the aftertaste. But it's not so bad.

Gavin - Buttery mouth feel. Notes of cherry with a bitter aftertaste. After it breathed for a bit, the buttery flavors went away, and the general taste improved. Notes of cherry are still there, but it has mellowed out a lot. And still bittery, but it's fine.

Megan - Bitter and bad.

Barb - That was much better than the Reserva Tinto 5 Elementos. Still a red wine, so not a favorite, but it's good for a red.
